Background

The Trading Journey

From Academia to Markets

Maarten's fascination with trading started during his undergraduate years at the University of Amsterdam. He wasn't content with theory alone. The intersection of mathematics and real market behavior captivated him — the patterns, the psychology, the mechanics of how prices actually move. That curiosity led him to pursue an MSc in Financial Economics, completing it in 2010 with a focus on quantitative methods and market microstructure.

Seven Years in the Trenches

After graduation, Maarten joined a boutique investment firm in Rotterdam as a proprietary trader. This wasn't desk research — it was real capital, real P&L, real consequences. Over seven years, he developed systematic approaches to market analysis and refined his understanding of risk control. He traded equities, commodities, forex, and derivatives. He experienced the 2015 currency crisis firsthand. He navigated the 2020 pandemic shock. These weren't theoretical exercises. They were lessons written in volatility and marked-to-market losses.

Why Education Matters

That market experience shaped Maarten's core conviction: trading education must be grounded in reality, not promises. He's seen countless courses that oversell results. He's watched retail traders follow mechanical systems that worked in backtests but failed in live markets. At PrimeTrade Layer, he's committed to something different. The knowledge base emphasizes analytical thinking, structured methodology, and understanding market mechanics. It's about traders improving themselves through rigorous self-examination, not following signals blindly.

Contributing Beyond Trading

Outside of content development, Maarten contributes to Dutch financial education initiatives and speaks regularly at trading conferences across Europe. He believes the trading education landscape needs voices grounded in actual market experience. He's not here to promise wealth or easy returns. He's here to help traders think better about markets.

Approach

Teaching Philosophy

"Traders improve through rigorous self-examination and understanding market mechanics, not through mechanical signals or promised returns. Real education is grounded in what actually works in real markets."

No Promises

We don't promise wealth or guaranteed returns. Trading involves risk. Education should prepare you for that reality, not hide from it.

Analytical Rigor

Every strategy, every method, every framework is examined critically. We show you the reasoning, the assumptions, and the limitations.

Market-Tested Ideas

Content comes from real trading experience across multiple market cycles and asset classes. Not theory. Not backtests alone. Real experience.

Structured Learning

Knowledge builds methodically. You start with foundations, progress through intermediate concepts, and develop sophisticated understanding. No shortcuts.
